Bridge over the River Loire
in Orleans, France Wim Hoeckman, Belgium This article presents a new bridge
with an inclined arch construction over the River Loire to the west of
Orleans in France. The bridge, which entered service in November 2000,
has a total length of 470 m and consists of a central arch bridge, entirely
of steel, and two smaller bridges in concrete (33.6 and 58.8 m long) at
the embankments. The bridge deck is suspended from the arch by means of
a series of hangers. The arch is located at the western side of the bridge,
between the pedestrian and the traffic lane. It is a planar arch and lies
at an inclination of 22° with four traffic lanes, two lanes for pedestrians
and two for cyclists, the cross section is 25.74 m wide at mid-span. The
width varies in order to create a passage for the arch between the traffic
lanes and the pedestrian lane downstream.
